Education & Revolution is a free six-week course for educators presented by Remaking Education as Care, Emancipation, Struggle, and Solidarity (RECESS), with support from the Pan African Student Union, Socialist Unity, Migrante Quebec, and Anakbayan Montreal. The goal of the course is to compare the role of education in revolutionary resistance movements to its role in state projects established following the victory of such movements. The course will begin by studying ongoing struggles and progress toward nation-states established through popular liberation fronts. The topics of study will be the Landless Workers’ Movement in Brazil, the Zapatistas Army of National Liberation in Chiapas, the People’s Democratic Revolution in the Philippines, Somalia and the Socialist Constitution, Eritrea, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, in that order.
The course is designed for student teachers, working teachers, community educators, and organizers. However, anyone interested in the course content is welcome to participate. Though this is the second part the Education & Revolution curriculum, participants need not have attended the first part of the course to understand the material or register.
Weekly two-and-a-half-hour lessons will take place on Saturday afternoons. Each lesson will consist of a roughly one-and-a-half-hour lecture followed by group discussion activities. Registration is optional.
