FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Malta: Remember Victory Day and allow the Gaza Freedom Flotilla to dock!
On May 2nd, a humanitarian aid ship organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (https://freedomflotil-
la.org) was bombed by Israeli drones in international waters off the coast of Malta on its way to Gaza
from Tunisia. The attack set the ship on fire, created a breach in the hull and cut off communication
with the ship. Dozens of international activists from Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Columbia, Brazil,
North America and Europe were preparing to board from Malta in an attempt to breach Israel’s
decades-long siege on Gaza, which was ramped up in the last 3 months with an absolute blockade of
all aid — including food and water — into the Gaza Strip by Israel. While the Maltese government
aided in putting out the fires, it has not allowed the ship to dock in Malta, insisting that it be repaired at
sea. Other European Union countries are also refusing to assist.
This despicable and inhospitable behaviour perpetuates complicity in the war crime of starvation
which Malta itself experienced during the embargo by Germany and Italy during WWII during which
“the Siege of Malta…lasted from June 11, 1940, to November 20, 1942, encompassing two years, five
months, one week, and two days. During this period, Malta endured over 3,000 bombing raids in an
effort to destroy the island's Royal Air Force defenses and ports”1. At the time of the George Cross
award in 1942, which is now part of the Maltese national flag, “military resources and food rations in
Malta were practically depleted. Fuel was restricted to military action and heavily rationed, the popula-
tion was on the brink of starvation”2.
We therefore demand an end to Maltese and EU complicity with Isreal, the docking and assistance
given to the Conscience ship, so aptly named given Malta’s own brush with starvation. We invite the
public to join us in large numbers this Sunday May 11th at 13h to remind the Maltese and E.U. gov -
ernments that complicity in genocide is unacceptable. Protests will be held at the following locations
to demand that the Government of Malta and the European Union immediately allow the Conscience
to dock:
Montreal: E.U. Delegation Consulate, 700 rue de la Gauchetière O.
Ottawa: E.U. Delegation Consulate, 150 Metcalfe St.
Toronto: Consulate General of Malta, 3300 Blood Street W
