Join Robyn Maynard and friends for the launch of the expanded and revised edition of Policing Black Lives: State Violence in Canada from Slavery to the Present.
The bestselling first edition of Policing Black Lives became a mainstay of bookshelves and classrooms across North America and Europe as the first comprehensive account of the state-sanctioned surveillance, criminalization and punishment of Black lives in Canada. This revised and expanded edition updates the original text in the wake of global Black uprisings in 2020 and offers new insights on how to build liveable futures without policing.
Delving behind Canada’s veneer of multiculturalism and tolerance, award-winning scholar and activist Robyn Maynard traces the afterlives of slavery across multiple institutions. Maynard sheds light on the state’s role in perpetuating colonial dispossession, racial profiling, police killings, incarceration, immigration detention, deportation, exploitative migrant labour practices, disproportionate child removal and the school-to-prison pipeline, as well as the ubiquity of Black resistance.
Panelists
Robyn Maynard is an author and an assistant professor at the University of Toronto-Scarborough. Her writing on borders, policing, abolition and Black feminism is taught widely in universities across Canada, the United States and Europe.
Marie-Célie Agnant is a poet, writer, translater, and performer. Her work, since her breakthrough novel La Dot de Sara (1995), explores themes of solitude, racism, alterity, and exile.
Marlihan Lopez is an Afro-Caribbean feminist memory worker and community organizer committed to unearthing, preserving, and honouring the cultural and epistemic productions Black women and gender-expansive people.
Belen Blizzard is an artist, poet and community organizer living and working in Tiotha:ke, Montreal. They hold a BA in Women’s Studies from Concordia University. Their work engages with Afropessimism, queer of color critique, performance and abolitionist thought.

Habitation Jean-Valets, 8445 Bloomfield (métro Parc)
L'évacuation des Habitations Jean-Valets nous hante encore. Cet immeuble de 65 unités à loyers modiques, destinés à des locataires aîné-e-s a été évacué le 31 octobre 2022 en raison de problèmes structurels. Cette évacuation a été un cauchemar pour les locataires, dont beaucoup ont été relogé-e-s hors du quartier, les coupant ainsi de leurs ressources, de leur suivi médical et social et de leurs réseaux de soutien. Trois ans plus tard, l'immeuble reste silencieux, alors qu'un nombre croissant de locataires de Parc-Extension peinent à trouver un logement en raison des hausses des loyers et des évictions. Pourtant, aucun projet de rénovation des logements n'est encore prévu, malgré un investissement de 2,2 milliards de dollars dans la rénovation des logements sociaux dans le cadre de l'entente Québec-Canada.

The evacuation of Habitations Jean-Valets haunts us still. This 65-unit social housing complex for senior tenants was evacuated on October 31, 2022 due to structural problems. The evacuation was a nightmare for tenants, many of whom were relocated outside the neighborhood- cutting them off from their resources, health and social service follow-ups, and support networks. Three years later, the building remains eerily silent, at a time when a growing number of Parc-Extension tenants are struggling to find housing due amidst rising rents and evictions. Yet, there is no plan to renovate the units, despite a $2.2 billion investment in renovating social housing through the Québec-Canada agreement.Join us to demand that the Habitations Jean-Valets be maintained as social housing and renovated without delay! There will be speeches, music, costumes, candy and haunted vibes!

Bureau de la députée Chantal Rouleau 500, boulevard Saint-Jean-Baptiste, MontréalTout le personnel scolaire, les parents, les enfants et la communauté sont invités à se rassembler pour dénoncer les coupures budgétaires et le manque criant de ressources dans nos écoles, du CPE à l’université.
Depuis juin, Uni-es pour l’École sonne l’alarme sur les compressions en éducation et exige un réinvestissement massif.
Face à l’absence de vision du gouvernement, nous lançons deux semaines d’actions, du 26 octobre au 8 novembre, sous le thème :
« Couper en éducation, c’est épeurant ! »
« Couper en éducation, c’est épeurant ! »Uni-es pour l’École Montréal vous invite à vous mobiliser devant le bureau de Chantal Rouleau, ministre de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, qui siège au Conseil des ministres et appuie ces coupures. Ce ministère finance aussi les organismes communautaires, essentiels à l’éducation populaire, mais leur financement est largement insuffisant.
Comme c’est la veille de l’Halloween, venez déguisé·es.
